User Interface Design, Web Development
China
HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Mura CMS

The client hired me for several related projects. I worked primarily on front-end web development, but also contributed user interface design on some of them. All of these are internal websites used by DHL’s employees all around China.

DHL China Sales Department

Sales Department Intranet

This site contains channel information, news updates, case studies, and useful tools. I developed a custom theme for their content management system, Mura CMS. (Web Development)

Training and Development Portal

This site features training modules, learning tools, and career resources for the Sales Department employees. (Web Development)

Telesales Training and Development Portal

This site features training modules, learning tools, and career resources specifically for the telephone sales team. I developed a custom theme for their content management system, Mura CMS. I also revised Mura CMS itself to fix WYSIWYG editor bugs and IE6 incompatibilities. In addition, I styled the separate forum component to match the rest of the site. (Web Development)

Case Study Library

This site features case studies of successful sales operations, plus a feedback system to encourage discussion. (User Interface Design and Web Development)

Quiz Manager

The sales training managers use this application to manage quizzes, questions, enrollment, reports, messages, and mailing lists. (User Interface Design and Web Development)

DHL China Operations Department

Training and Development Portal

This site enables Ops Department employees to keep track of their training history, plan their career development, and access various resources. (User Interface Design and Web Development)

Quiz Manager

The operations training managers use this application to manage quizzes, questions, enrollment, reports, messages, and mailing lists. A file management system based on CKFinder was also integrated with the main application. I developed new CKFinder modules and created a skin to match the rest of the site. The Challenges

Two of the challenges in these projects involved ColdFusion and Internet Explorer 6.

  • ColdFusion. They wanted to continue using ColdFusion because their older portals were built with it. Since they also wanted to use a CMS, they decided to go with Mura CMS, a rather obscure and complex piece of ColdFusion software with little documentation and almost no community around it.
  • Internet Explorer 6. These sites were for internal use, and the company had strict rules against upgrading technology—so I had to make it all work in IE6.

Separately, these two elements would have been minor bumps in the road. Together, they kept me on my toes, solving problems and learning every step of the way.
